Lambton Shores Improves Accessibility at Grand

Bend Beach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 15, 2017 – (Lambton Shores, ON) – With the official start of beach season just

around the corner, the Municipality of Lambton Shores is pleased to announce two new

additions to the Grand Bend Beach that will provide an enjoyable beach going

experience for persons of all abilities.

The boardwalk at the Grand Bend Beach has been completely transformed to a

concrete surface after receiving funding from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure

Program. Not only will maintenance of the concrete be easier than the previous

wooden surface, but it will also provide a more level surface for people with mobility

challenges.

In addition to the concrete boardwalk, thanks to a generous grant received from the

Grand Bend Area Community Foundation, the Municipality has purchased a PathMat.

The PathMat is made of recycled material and is designed to increase accessibility to

the waterfront for people in wheelchairs, pushing strollers, or simply anyone else that

wishes to use the mat to access the beach area.

“Lambton Shores is continuing to improve access to municipal properties,”

says Lambton Shores Mayor, Bill Weber. “The new concrete boardwalk and installation

of the beach access mat are great examples of Council’s commitment to making

municipal spaces accessible for all”.

The PathMat beach access mat provides a durable, slip-resistant pathway that is both

pedestrian and wheelchair accessible. The UV-resistant, mesh elastomeric material

adapts to uneven surfaces, and provides a sturdy way to travel over soft sand. It is

portable, easy to install, and easy to maintain.

The 5 foot wide mat will run from the boardwalk to near the waterfront, starting at the

beach house. It will remain in place for the 2017 beach season and will be reinstalled for

subsequent beach seasons.
